What a season it has been. Full of ups and downs and highs and lows.
I came across the following TED talk (Bel Pesce: 5 ways to kill your dreams) and it could not have been better timed as I was just thinking about how challenging and rewarding the past season has been. It is not over for all my teams, but for my U19 Varsity boys it is. (Check out the video it is short and really good. #inspire #beinspired)
Anyway, I tell my teams that it is good, no, that it is great to dream big. It is important to have dreams and set goals and chase after them because that is how we can see where we are going and be able to know when we get there.
I also tell them that it is not about the goals and dreams that we have because those are just mile markers and destinations along our journey.
Well that’s confusing! What do I mean? What am I trying to say? Are goals important or not?
Well, what I mean is that goals are necessary and if they are big enough and ambitious enough then you will challenge yourself to go beyond limits you never thought were possible, but just remember that it is not about the goal itself (the “destination”), it is the journey we go on to get there that matters. That is where we learn and grow.
Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome. – Arthur Ashe
So as we near the end of the season I am already getting a bit nostalgic and wanted to share. I am really grateful and happy to have worked with some great kids and teams this season along my journey and I hope that you all have had great journeys too!
